it's a long one

We are in HOUSTON! It's so good to be back in Texas. Mason & I flew in on Saturday to visit with the family for the week. It will be a nice break from the hotel and as soon as we get back, we move into the house. I can't wait to have more space and be in a house, rather than a hotel room.

Saturday morning, Adam & I left at 1am...yes, you read that correctly, to leave for L.A. Our flight was scheduled to leave LAX at 6:45am, but we had to take a detour due to the bad weather. It had been snowing in the mountains all around us, upto 15inches, but Bakersfield didn't get any, sad I know. The snow & ice covered the "grapevine" pass, which is the easiest and most common route from Bakersfield to L.A. Days in advance, we planned out alternate routes in case the "grapevine" didn't reopen. We found a route that would take us out of town, without having to worry about the weather conditions too much, but it was obviously a bit longer.

We got to LAX around 4am and parked the truck for a bit, while Adam spent some time playing with Mason (he was wide awake). After getting all checked in, it was time to say goodbye to Daddy. I know it had to be so hard for Adam to say goodbye, but it was a much needed trip home for us.

Mason was a trooper the entire flight. He slept for a majority of the flight and I found ways to entertain him, once he decided to wake up. There were people all around saying how "this is going to be a long flight" and "maybe they will let us switch seats". This one lady kept going on and on about it and she literally was across the aisle from me and I could hear her. Luckily, she didn't have to worry about us.

However, there was a couple sitting behind and next to me that had two little girls. The mom and the older daughter, about 7 sat behind us and the father and the younger girl, about 3, sat next to me. As soon as they boarded, I smelled something, and at first I thought Mason had given me a poopy diaper, so I decided to lift him up while he was asleep and smell him...nope it wasn't him. Hmm...where is that coming from? Then I heard a tiny dog in a carrier behind me, which happened to be with the couple, so I assumed that the puppy was scared and did a number in it's carrier. Not a pleasant smell, but hopefully they would go take care of it in the bathroom. As the flight progressed, the smell got worse and stronger. I couldn't figure it out until the dad next to me lifted up his daughter and I saw her pants...yep, she literally pooped her pants, I could see it.

I didn't know what to do, but I thought I was going to be sick. Everyone kept looking around trying to figure out the smell and of course looked my way thinking it was the baby, but I kindly explained to them it wasn't Mason. I didn't want to be rude and ask the gentlemen to take care of his little girl, but surely he could smell it too and would do something. Well he didn't and everyone was complaining. Finally, the stewardess came by and asked the gentlemen to take care of his daughters pants because it was making the guests in the cabin sick. He started to change her clothes right there, but she nicely stopped him and ask that he take care of it in the bathroom. Thank goodness for her, because I was about to pass out from the smell. And everyone thought the baby would be the problem on the flight.

Our flight arrived in Houston early and which was good, because I was tired and Mason was ready to see his Mimi. After mom picked us up, we headed to Mr. Crain's house. He is our photographer from the wedding. I know this is awful, but I still hadn't picked out pictures from our wedding package and needed to select photos for the family. I know, I'm horrible, but I did already have the proofs and everyone has had a chance to see them, except a few people. He showed us some of his new work and we were able to chat for a bit. He is an older gentlemen and reminds me of a jolly snowman. So sweet. We selected the sizes we wanted and headed out to Katy. (It must be noted that so many people took wonderful pics from the wedding, that I didn't have the sudden urge to rush out and get the professional photos. My dad alone took 700 pictures.)

The night we had dinner with my parents and my sister at Omars, a local mexican food restaurant. I was craving mexican food and needed my fix before heading back to California. I was so tired after dinner, that I was ready to go to bed at 7pm. Mason hadn't been sleeping well lately and it was starting to catch up to me, plus the early wake up call from the night before.

Sunday morning, I planned on going to church, but ended up sleeping in and getting Mason a late morning nap before heading to my in-laws for lunch. Luckily, both Adam & my family live in Katy and only about 10 minutes from each other. It will make our trips home for the holidays much easiser. We were able to visit with Laura & Matt, Anna & Matt Z., and his parents. The cousins, Faith and Mason, did a lot of playing and both fell asleep shortly after arriving at the grandparents house.

Mason hasn't been himself for the last few days, since last Friday actually. He was tugging at his ear and I was worried he might have an ear infection, but he wasn't tugging hard and he sometimes plays with his ears when he is tired, so I assumed it was that and kept a close eye on him. He normally sleeps thru the night no problem, but for some reason he was waking up almost every hour, thus why I'm so tired. This continued while we were in Houston and it was followed with a horrible cough.

My sister & I ventured out into town today to do a little shopping. She currently works part time at Tallowood Baptist in the childcare department and needed to turn in payroll, so we payed a visit to my old church. My has it changed. They have built a whole new childrens center and new offices for the staff members. As we walked into the offices, I was greeted by familiar faces and it brought back such great memories of the place where I first learned about Jesus Christ, was baptized, involved in choir and youth group. Also, both my sister and my parents were married at Tallowood. After our nice visit, we decided to do a little shopping and headed towards Memorial City Mall. Christina needed a dress for a wedding this weekend and Connor and Mason were having fun playing together.

On the way back out to Katy, Mason would not stop crying. This too was a sign he wasn't feeling well because he normally is very quiet or talkative in the car. I placed a call to Dr. Lentsch, his pediatrician, and she worked me in right away. I was in and out in 5 minutes. Unfortunately, he has a double ear infection...eek! She was great and gave a medication that would help right away and I could take on the plane no problem, because it doesn't need to be refidgerated. As soon as he got the medicine, you could tell the difference. He will be on antibiotics for the next 10 days, but it is worth it not to see him in pain.

Hopefully tonight, I will get some sleep and Mason will too. I know he needs it. Sorry for the long post, but that is the update from our end. Hope everyone is doing well.

first word

Mason said his first word tonight..."DADA". I was so excited to hear it and I didn't think to get the video camera out. Oh well. I don't think he really understands what he is saying, but it was still so precious.

Calling all Super Readers...

Haha, the title of this post is from a show on PBS called Super Why about reading, but I thought it worked for this entry. Okay, my friend Summer had a great idea to see who was reading her blog and I thought I should do the same. I always wonder how many people actually read this blog. Even if you are a regular reader and I know who you are, or you just came across my blog from a friend or a blog stalker(haha), say hello and leave a comment.

House Update

Hey everyone. Hope all of you are doing well. It's been a little over a week since we moved out to Bakersfield and I thought I would send an update on life in California. As all of you probably know, we are staying in an Extended Stay Suite until the end of January. We opted to do this so that it would allow us more time to find a place to live, also to save money since Adam's company is paying for our stay and meals.

We have been looking online for months now, trying to get an idea of the neighborhoods and area of town we want to live in. We have decided to rent for a year and then think about buying after that. It's hard moving to a new state and city that you don't know too much about, other than what you read and hear. You have to experience and see it for yourself in order to get familiar and form an opinion on what you want.

Last week, I spent most of my time learning the roads and trying to see what I could of Bakersfield. If you don't know, Bakersfield is in the valley in southern California. We are about 2 hours from LA and 3 hours from San Diego. Bakersfield is the largest county in the oil industry, so we have oil wells all over town. It is the fastest growing city in the US and has a populations of 325,000. The town is built around these oil fields. The more established parts of town are the East side, which you don't really venture too unless you have to because it's not the safest and the Southwest. We have been told and agree that the west part of town is the place to be. We have been told that either the Southwest or the Northwest is the area to live in.

I was looking online last Tuesday and came across a listing for a house. It had 3 bedrooms/2 Baths, 1600 sq. feet, one story and only 4 years old and in our budget. I emailed the owner to ask additional questions and he responded right away and we set an appointment to walk thru last Saturday. I continued to look in case it didn't work out...we want to keep our options open.

Saturday we went to look at the house and liked it right away. It had everything we need and some little perks. It has a huge kitchen, which is a nice change from the kitchen in our apartment, with a ton of cabinet space, a big pantry and the fridge is included in the rent. It has french doors leading out to the backyard and sliding glass door leading to the backyard from the Master bedroom. The closet in the Master Bath has a his/her sides with a big shelving unit in the middle. The owner seemed very nice and he told us he would be in contact. We heard from him on Sunday morning and he said it was ours. We move in the first weekend in February.

I have enclosed a picture of the front of the house. I'm sorry for the poor quality but it was taken in the car when I drove by one day. I will take more and send them your way as soon as we get over there again. We love and miss all of you and pray for you guys daily.

My Goals

I don't make New Year's Resolutions. I believe that you don't need a new year to start a goal. If you do, then most likely you won't follow thru. Don't get me wrong, I do make goals and set out to do my best to achieve them. It doesn't always happen, but the most important thing is that I give it my all.
1. Lose 10lbs and gain more muscle. I have lost all of my baby weight from the pregnancy but I'm not as toned as I used to be. I have two weddings this summer and my high school reunion in September and I want to be in shape.
2. Work out atleast 3 times a week for 30 minutes in order to tone up and be healthier all around. Plus it will give me more energy and with a little one, I'll need it.
3. Read more. I love to read, but don't really make time to anymore.
4. Spend more time outside and being active. I live in this gorgeous new state and I want to take advantage of it.
5. Read to Mason everyday.
6. Improve on my sewing skills. I know how, but it has been years and I want to start making throw pillows and curtains.
7. Go on date nights again. Adam & I were great at this when we dated and after we got married. Once we learned we were pregnant, they slowly started decreasing and sad to say, we haven't been on a date since Mason was born. It will be much harder living all the way across the country, but I know we can do it.
8. Take a weekend trip with just Adam.

getting settled in

With Mason napping next to me, I thought it would be a good time to catch up. Things are finally calming down around here. For the first few days, it felt like I was on vacation, especially since we are staying in a hotel, we eat out every day, and we explore the city. It's finally starting to hit home that we are here for good, well atleast for the next 3 to 5 years.

We have some family friends in Bakersfield. I have known Bill & Peggy Boyer for almost 20 years now. They were in my parents sunday school class at Tallowood years ago, also lived in Katy and switched to Kingsland Baptist when we did. They moved out to Bakersfield about 4 years ago due to Mr. Boyer's job. As soon as we learned we were moving out here, I emailed Mrs. Boyer to ask as many questions I could about the city, churches, and any other details I needed information on. She was so helpful and told us to call as soon as we got out here. Sunday evening they invited us over to their house for dinner. It was so nice to see a friendly face. They were able to give some great advice and suggestions about Bakersfield.

Monday I decided to take it easy and just relax and do nothing. It's been the first time I have done that since the week before Thanksgiving. Mason & I just played, took naps and played some more until Adam got home.

Adam said he had a good first day and he stayed plenty busy. I know it's hard for him being away from Mason, especially since he was home with us for the last 6 months. There aren't many dads that get to spend the first 6 months of their sons lives with them day in and out.

The movers arrived with my car today and the extra stuff we requested they bring to the hotel. I know Mason will be glad to have his new carseat back, as well as his exersaucer. It is definitely hard entertaining a little boy all day, especially when most of his toys and books are packed in a storage unit until we move into a house.

we made it

It has been a very busy weekend for our family. Thursday & Friday night, we stayed with my parents while our apartment was packed and loaded into the moving van. The movers arrived on Thursday morning and started packing up everything we own into boxes, outside of our furniture. By that afternoon, over 100 boxes were stacked up from corner to corner and in every room. Friday morning, a different set of guys showed up to load everything into the eighteen wheeler. The head mover, Brian, came down from Wisconsin to move us to Bakersfield. He was able to fit everything on the truck with no problems, including our vehicle. He will arrive on Thursday to unload our car and to bring us some extra stuff we asked to be put to the side, so that we would could have some more clothes for us and toys for Mason.

Saturday morning, my mom made my favorite breakfast, which she calls a "Farmers Breakfast". It consists of eggs scrambled with potatoes, bacon or sausage and cheese mixed together served with either toast or biscuits. She even brewed a cup of coffee for me, which was so thoughtful because neither of my parents or Adam drinks coffee.

Adam's family came over and we took some pictures with everyone and then said our goodbye's to them. Tears were shed and it was a very bittersweet moment. We loaded in the truck and my parents drove us to IAH. Again more tears were shed, although I think I did pretty good in trying to hold it in. If we were only a couple hours away by drive it would be different. Atleast with the technology today, it is much easier to stay in touch.

Getting all the bags checked in and thru security was a breeze. Luckily, my mother-in-law traveled back in October with my neice, Faith, and she was able to give us some advice on making it a smooth process. While we were waiting to go thru security, Dr. Neil Frank from KHOU in Houston stood in front of us with his son. They were going skiing in Colorado for a couple weeks.

I prayed and prayed days before our flight that it would go smoothly and Mason would be an angel. I was so worried about his little ears popping and how excited he gets sometimes and then begins to screech. However, he was so good and we were so lucky. He was smiling and flirting as we boarded the plane and were waiting to take off. Once we started to pull away from the gate, I noticed he was rubbing his eyes, so I was hoping after I gave him his bottle, he would fall asleep and he did. He slept for 3 hours and didn't wake up until we were about to land. I was so proud of him.

We had to gather all 7 pieces of our luggage and take a shuttle to National Car Rental to get our vehicle and then drive about 20 minutes outside of LA to meet Adam's boss. Once we met up with him, Adam received his company vehicle and we proceeded onto Bakersfield. By this time, it was starting to get dark outside, so we weren't able to see too much, but we drove across the mountains into Bakersfield. After we checked into our hotel, we ran a couple of errands and ate a quick dinner and crashed. We were all exhausted from the day.
